In this series, Tal Nahoum breaks into abandoned houses just before they are demolished, and invites women from the area to be photographed inside the deserted spaces. Through photography, Nahoum examines the empty domestic spaces, which were recently vibrant with life, and still resonate memories. The women in the photographs blend into the deserted space – they are strong, present, and gaze directly and confidently at the camera amid the chaos and destruction. In Deserted, Nahoum contemplates her own relevance in the world, grappling with the relentless cycle considering the destruction of the old and its replacement with the new and improved. Her work seeks to find meaning in a place where it is no longer recognized by others. She wants to validate these places, make them come alive and show their beauty and value. This series is about her femininity, wrinkles, aging skin, physical ailments, and increasing fatigue. Together with women who project femininity, strength and power, captured in an island of loneliness, she turns to the viewers and asks – what about me?
