Home-Based in Bavaria
2021
Home-Based in Bavaria presents a one-of-a-kind symbiosis of community, military, and nature, focusing on Europe’s largest military base located in the center of Bavaria and extending over 233 square kilometers. While 20% of the area is used for international military training, the remaining grounds are untouched wilderness. The adjoining U.S. Army barracks and housing areas are a home away from home for many thousands of U.S. soldiers and civilians and their families, and have been so since the liberation of Nazi Germany in 1945. Sustaining this military training setting has generated a unique habitat wherein humans and vast nature coexist.
Lila Hartig captures the Bavarian-American essence of Grafenwöhr military training facility; the great openness that characterizes both the landscape and the people, despite language barriers or access restrictions, the cultural diversity in balance with nature, and the development of beauty in times of peace.
