In the heart of Rwanda lies Bugesera, a picturesque region that has risen from the ashes of a horrifying genocide that occurred 29 years ago, leaving an indelible scar on humanity.
Every day, tens of thousands of children and youth make their way to schools, traversing through dirt and mud trails that link the region’s 566 villages, the majority journeying by foot. Bicycles, a common possession among children in the west, remain a rare treasure for many in Bugesera.
On one of many visits to Rwanda, Israel Premier Tech, a professional cycling team and annual Tour du Rwanda competitor, was inspired to support the country’s sole women’s cycling team by providing them with knowledge, equipment, and training. Their endeavor empowered the cyclists, leading them to significant victories. This remarkable transformation spearheaded the initiative “Racing for Change,” rooted in a commitment to instilling hope in youth, wherever they may be.
Sylvan Adams, owner of Israel Premier Tech, often refers to this outreach effort as being rooted in the Jewish concept Tikun Olam, which embodies the idea of repairing the world by contributing to society. Adams’ contribution, along with that of team founder Ron Baron and thousands of cyclists and fans from around the globe, the Field of Dreams cycling center, unparalleled in Rwanda and perhaps in all of Africa, was established.
The center is designed for a target audience of children and teenagers, and features a thrilling pump track surrounded by a training and racing circuit that allows local riders to train, ultimately chasing their dreams in a safe, professional environment. Since its establishment, the center has hosted races, drawing participation from youth across the region and the nation, and children who never before owned bicycles, now have the opportunity to ride together.
Partnering with the local community, Israel Premier Tech envisions that the Field of Dreams center will spark significant transformation on multiple fronts: mud roads will be paved, and new infrastructure will emerge. Plans include the establishment of an academy and a school near the field, providing unprecedented opportunities for the next generation.
