Tianhu Yuan’s Chongqing trilogy explores the complex and evolving relationship between human beings and urban environments. The city’s self-iterating process unfolds as an old block is demolished to make way for a new shopping district. Man-made tunnels, bridges, and railways replace the mountains and rivers that once defined the city’s character. At the intersection between progress and tradition, people choose to believe they are moving towards a better future. However, when opting to develop, the price for gaining something is to leave something behind. By capturing these moments of transition and transformation, Yuan highlights the intricate societal challenges in the face of environmental preservation, contemplating our role in shaping cities and the environment.
