Requiem | Vered Rafaely

Curator: Maya Anner

In his final year of life, in his assisted living apartment, I photographed my father. Fifty years earlier, he photographed me. He taught me how to hold a camera steadily and how to frame the subject. Then it was my turn to photograph him. He engaged with the camera openly and actively, willingly posing to be photographed, eager to remain vivid, immortalized, alive. The photographic act became an inseparable part of our time together. With time, I developed a profound view of him, recognizing what lay between us. Later, when looking at the photographs on the computer screen, details I hadn’t noticed earlier began to reveal themselves. Requiem unearths a compassionate and respectful look into that which we don’t face; the inevitable, human, and painful aspect of aging and approaching the end of life.
