Finding Safe Space
IsraAID

When IsraAID arrived on the Ukrainian border in February 2022, the first task was setting up a safe space for mothers and children who were fleeing to neighboring countries. Just days after the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the IsraAID tent gave Ukrainian refugees a child-friendly place to stay warm and relieve stress and for mothers to regroup, access emotional support, and plan their next steps.

Creating safe spaces during a crisis is crucial anywhere. Ukrainians have seen so many of their structures destroyed – homes, critical infrastructure like water systems and access to medical care, routines like attending school or going to work, or communities. Safe spaces come in many forms. They may be physical buildings or networks of emotional support, but what they provide is a respite from destruction, a chance to regroup, reconnect, and grow the resilience necessary to find hope in the darkest times.

Since the first days of the full-scale Russian invasion, IsraAID has supported Ukrainian communities as they create new alternative spaces. Whether providing safe water in the city of Mykolaiv, training psychologists to support staff and patients in Ukrainian hospitals, delivering medical supplies, creating child-friendly spaces and support groups, or providing essential aid to endure harsh winters, IsraAID is committed to creating the spaces that help communities reconnect and rebuild.
